ALBERT SCHWEIZER GYMNASIUM
Activating the Perception of Public Space
Berlin, Germany, 2012
As open spaces in Berlin become increasingly scarce, the design of public squares in neighbourhoods as places for young people to spend time is becoming increasingly important.
Albert-Schweitzer-Platz in Neukölln, surrounded by a school and residential buildings, could serve as an important public space in the northern section of Karl-Marx-Straße. However, it is not perceived as such, but rather as a problematic, neglected place whose responsibility remains unclear, thereby tolerating drug dealing, unauthorised parking and extensive overgrowth.
During the workshop, students, teachers, neighbours and experts jointly developed ideas and wishes for a concept for the use and design of the square.
